“Our work has just begun. Please help me continue working for you.”
-Jim Patterson
Jim Patterson is a Cal Poly graduate and successful businessman who has lived in Atascadero for more than 30 years. His experience in business, ranching, and water conservation makes him uniquely qualified to provide the leadership needed to meet the challenges facing San Luis Obispo County.
Jim was elected as County Supervisor with a mandate for change. Fifth District residents were tired of unresponsive representation, poorly-planned development, traffic congestion, and lack of comprehensive water resource planning.
As our County Supervisor, Jim has been a champion for affordable housing, infrastructure development, and natural resource protection. He has been an advocate for upholding the County general plan, reducing sprawl, and preservation of the County’s agricultural land and signature landscapes.
Jim initiated a strategic planning process for the Board of Supervisors to aid in County-wide priority setting and budgeting. He voted against a pay raise for Supervisors to help balance the budget. He established an “open door” policy for all by establishing regular office hours in Atascadero and San Luis Obispo. And he helped the residents of Creston establish their own Advisory Board to give them a formal voice in County Government.
As Jim nears the end of his first term as County Supervisor, he has accomplished a great deal. As a lifelong community leader and volunteer, Jim knows more needs to be done.
The local impacts of worsening national and state economies are looming. Development pressures continue to compete with farming, ranching and the preservation of open space. A growing population is straining our water supply. Local responses to these larger challenges will define our quality of life far into the future.
But with challenges come opportunities. Jim is committed to implementing renewable, sustainable energy practices to reduce air and water pollution, and our reliance on foreign oil. In addition, clean and green technologies can create high-paying local jobs that will benefit our economy. And, we must continue the current trend of decreasing crime and retain San Luis Obispo County’s reputation as one of the safest places in the state.
Jim believes elected representatives should listen before they lead, and that all residents must have a voice in determining what is best for their communities. As our Supervisor, Jim Patterson will continue to keep the public engaged in the process so we can all work together to keep San Luis Obispo a great place to live, work and raise a family.

Help Jim fulfill his commitment to:
- Conservation and management of our precious water supply.
- Supporting public safety, because we all deserve to feel safe in our own homes.
- Fiscal responsibility and strategic planning that ensures a well governed County.
- Protecting property rights for you and your community.
- Providing access to affordable, quality health care options.
- Advocating for affordable housing for working families.
- Protecting agricultural lands and open space - our county’s most valuable and productive assets.
- Assuring intelligently planned, well-managed growth to reduce sprawl.
